The Seasiders made two changes in the team that secured a narrow vietory at Horsley Hill last week . Cresswell resumed his place at right , back with Maitland as his partner , and Richardson was introduced at outside - left , Donald having been released for a ' Varsity match . There were several alterations in the Not . tingham team , the forward lin being rearranged , while Gibeon took Cope's place at right - back . There were not more than 9,000 spectators present when the teams turned out as follows : SOUTH SHIELDS . Hoffman . Cresswell Maitland Dreyer Hopkins Robeon ( J. W. ) Charlton Wilson Lillyerop Hawes Richardson O Death Richards Hill Cook Dolphin Dinsdale Flint Marriott Woodland Gibson Iremonger NOTTS COUNTY . Referee : Mr L. N. Fletcher , of Bury . The Game . Lillycrop won the toes , and the Northernere had the advantage of a slight breeze , but the home team were firet to become aggressive through Cook , who initiated a clever move ment on the right . Hoffman did well to gather an awkward centre from Dolphin , but the Shields custodian experienced consider able difficulty in clearing owing to the close attentions of Hill and Richards . Cresswell brought relief to his side , but the home forwards soon afterwards returned to the attack , and Death and Richards sent wide when well placed , the lively ball beating them on each occasion . The Shieldsmen worked their way to the other end , but Wilson and Lillycrop were wide of the mark with long - range shots . Eventually Dolphin was sent away on the wing , and after making splendid progress he sent in a delightful centre which caused the Shields defenders a good deal of anxiety . Hoffman punched the ball away , but Wood land secured from the Shields custodian's clearance and deftly placed the ball out to Death on the left . The winger promptly returned it into the goalmouth for Richards to miss by inches with a fast ground shot . Seasiders Hard Pressed . Hoffmann was called upon to fist out from Richards while Hill , for whom Cook had worked a neat position , narrowly missed with a capital drive . Twenty minutes had elapsed before Iremonger was called upon to handle the ball , but the two efforts by Hates and Charlton presented tle difficulty . was The Shields goal had a narrow escape when Death raced clear but there nobody up to support him . The Notts left - winger put in an accurate centre and Maitland made a faulty clearance , enabling Dolphin to secure possession . The right winger , put across the goal- . mouth for Hoffman to beat Hill in exciting race for the ball . an Considering the hard ground and the lively ball , play had reached a fairly high standard and Notts had displayed the greater , skill in controlling the leather . Cook and Dolphin were cheered for a capital movement on the right and the winger got in a nice centre which Richards " first - timer " but Hoffman met with a effected a brilliant clearance by diverting the ball outside for a futile corner . Penalty for Notts . The pressure on the Shields goal was Faintained by the home forwards but the Syuth Shields backs , Cresswell and Mait land were treating the crowd to a fine exhi and kicking with bition of defensive play , tackling resolutely rare judgment , while Hoffman was giving a superb displáy in goal . Notts , however , took the lead after thirty . eight minutes . Cook forced a corner on the right and the flag kick was admirably placed by Dolphin . Hill met the ball with his head and the leather looked like ' going into the net when Maitland stepped it with his hand The referee promptly awarded the home team a penalty and GIBSON , who was entrusted with the kick , gave Hcfiman no chance with a terrific drive . The Shields defenders were kept busy but they succeeded in hokling out . Just before the interval , Flint finished up a capital solo effort with a great centre from which Hill headed in but Hoffman brought off a great clearance . Half time score : NOTTS COUNTY SOUTH SHIELDS The home men were the first to attack after the interval , and after Cresswell had success fully stopped Cook , Dolphin Cook and Flint participated in a delightful triangular move ment which Cook wound up with a great centre . Shields started , and from the kick off Parker took the ball away , and when tackled by Thoms he put over to Carr for that player to end in a hard booming shot , which Gill cleverly handled . The Hardy and Kessler combination get going , and it was only an offside decision that pulled up the ' Pools ' inside man . United were next aggressive , and were awarded a free kick for hands well up in the Shields half . From the latter kick Short tried a long range shot which Brown handled with certainty . Any amount of enthusiasm was shown , but in the early stages Shields showed up the better in front of goal . In one of their raids Keenlyside's centre was intereepted by Step henson , who returned the ball for the Shields winger to send in another one , Parker just failing to turn the ball to account with a header . Then Hardy and Kessler contributed a lovely combined movement , and thereafter , although United pressed hard enough , the ball generally went to the feet of the oppos ing backs . A thrilling piece of play was seen when Hewitt , in undisputed possession , sent neatly into a packed goalmouth and Kessler with a smart header struck the crossbar . Hardy fastened on to the leather , but Robson inter cepted his close range shot . After a further exciting display a tussle right in the Shields goalmouth ensued , and the ball was sent over . Mul holland was brought down when well in the Shields territory , and THOMS , with a splendid drive from 18 yards range , scored a first - rate goal , which left the visiting custodian aten . This goal came after seventeen minutes play . Following a spell of mid - field play United resumed the attack in spirited fashion , both forwards and halves show ing a good deal of judgment . There was . however , very little to choose between the teams , the Shields ' forw ards being the more dangerous in their short - passing movements , two of which Crilley pulled up in a convincing style . At the other end another promising movement was initiated , Mulholland eventually slipping the ball across the goalmouth , where Ridley did well to scrape it away . Thoms got possessior but sent over the bar , and in the nex minute a splendid attempt from a free kick saw Brown handle confidently . Fo some time the ' Pools confined play to th Shields quarters eventually forcing corner which was of no avail . The game was carried to the other en where Crilley , under pressure , was force to concede a corner , which , however , wa well cleared . In the ensuing play . however , Shield came very near the mark , the timel intervention of Franks saving a danger ous situation . After two or three of the visiting va had banged in , a misunderstanding b the ' Poc's ' defence allowed Greenwell t put in a shot from close range , but h was badly hampered and the ball wen wide .
