Parker makes his debut for Seasiders at Horsley HIII .
A RE - ARRANGED FORWARD LINE .
( By " Wanderer . " )
The Port Vale team which visited Horsley , left foot screw shot , for which he is famous , fill this afternoon , was a very much more easily beat Smith , to the immense delight of formidable side then that which opposed the the crowd , Seasiders a year ago , and the consistency of their form this season is clearly indiqated by
Fitchford and Briscoe made a promis ing effort on the visitors ' left wing , but Cresswell cleared smartly , and once more the South Shields forwards , directed in spirited fashion by their new leader , applied great pressure , but the visitors were well served by their defenders Hopkins was cheered for hard defensive work , in which he beat his man time . South Shields next came into prom inence through a combined movement by Woods , Charlten and Dreyer .

The Port Vale forwards , showing capi tel combination , applied some for a while , but once more Hopkins came to the rescue and sent out a well timed pass to Keenlyside .
their League record .
Prior to this game they occupied sixth place on the table , being only two points behind the Shieldsmen , wno had dropped to the third position as the result of their defeat at Coventry last week .
Interest in the match this afternoon was
exceptionally keen owing to the introduction of Dick Parker , as leader of the Shields attack . Parker is no stranger to South Shields followers of the game , and his trans fer from Coventry City this week at a fee re ported to be well over four figures , was the best piece.of news we have heard for quite a long time . The centre - forward problem is not likely to cause much anxiety in the
future .
Another interesting change in the South Shields team was the substitution of George Ksenlyside for Kirkbride , on the left - wing , this being his first appearance for the Second Leaguers since his serious accident at Clap ton on Sept. 27th last year . Port Vale were compelled to make several alterations in their team through injuries .
South Shields were deprived of the services of Simpson Bainbridge , who hurt his knee at Coventry last week , and his place was taken by Charlton , this being the latter's second appearance for the Second League
team this season .
Number Two for Shields . There was another , exciting tussle in the Port Vale goalmouth following a corner well placed by Charlton , headers by both Hawes and Parker being met in a similar manner by the opposing players . The second goal came after 10 minutes ' play . Charlton , ra ing in from the wing , dropped in a centr which Kee lyside returned into the goal mouth . where , after a brief struggle.WOODS headed in a capital goal , the custodian hav ing no chance . After the visitors had forcei an abortive cornet , Parker led his men in great style , and placed perfectly to Charlton . who cross - passed to Woods . The Shields inside right , however , had too much speed on him at the time and he was unable to trap the ball , a great opening being lost . The ball went back to Charlton , who banged in a shot high over the crossbar . Parker had the misfortunte te hurt his foot and had to retire on the goal line for treatment . but he resumed soon afterwards . The South Shields forwards were showing capital understanding , the opposing Portf Walker won the toss , and the visitors defence being often hard - pressed . opened out with the sun in their faces . There Vale were skilfui in midfield work , but their Keen was a gate of about 18,000 spectators present . finishing efforts were not so good .
The Game .
Soon after the start the ball went out to Keen - lyside and Hawes worked splendidly lyside , who passed neatly to Hawes , but the together , the Shields ' left winger having Shields inside left was unable to make uselost none of his cunning tince he last of the opportunity through the timely inter made his appearance for the Second ference of McGarry . Hopkins immediately League team . afterwards sent the Shields forwards awar , Parker . was conspicuous fur clever and Hawes led a fine attack , which culmin footwork which enabled him to outwit ated in Parker placing neatly to Keenlyside , who banged the ball into the centre . Charl P. Purcell and to place neatly to Harry Woods . ho . when challenged , returned ton was well placed , ard as Smith ran out to clear , he sent in a fine shot which had the the ball into the centre instead of risking visting custodian beaten all the way , but , a shot on his own . The result was that fortunately for the vistors , the ball struck the opposing defence prevaile and R. Purcell on the back , and rebouded into Lyons was able to avert disaster . On two occasions the South ; Shields play . hard luck in Bot getting centre had efforts . through after clever Individual and his play generally gave iminense sat The visitors ' lett isfaction to the crowd . wing put the Shieldsmen on the defensiv but Blood , when well placed . sent higi . over the bar , while Page . a few minutes South Shields obtained the lead when the later , made a similar blundet . game was only two minutes old .
Shields One Up .

PORT VALE .
The Shields Jeft winger's progress was successfully checked by McGarry . Hamp son landed the ball right into the goal mouth . where Hawes , with a little luc . might have done the trick again but for the intervention of Lyons , who managed with difficulty to effect a clearance .
Keenlyside was again prominent on the left , and his effort led to a clever run by Parker , which finished abruptly through the Shielde centre being heavily charged off the
