The leather travelled rapidly from end to end and both goals were repeatedly assaulted , but without success to either side . Ridley defended splendidly at the Shields end , while John son , the Sunderland left back , frequently pulled up the Shields forwards with some judicious head work . It was & game of backs for a considerable time , and in the main the shots which did reach the custodian were , owing to the prompt tackling of the backs , from such a long range as to be lacking in sting . Keenlyside sent in a number of beau tiful centres which his inside man and Oxberry were not slow to take advantage of . Cuggy , however , proved himself a resolute tackler and the Shields wingers were pulled up before becoming danger ous . In the concluding stages of the game the Shieldsmen caused the Sunderland goal some anxiety when Keenlyside swung in a strong shot which was suo ceeded by another from Charlton . Demp ster gathered the leather in fine style however and cleared with Smith hot on his heels . Another raid by the Shields men a few moments later again looked dangerous , but Dempster again . was equal to the demands made upon him .
