HANLEY
Port Vale are a strong side at home , and were fully expected to give the Shieldsmen run for their money to - day :
The homesters made three changes in their nde . The Game .
The homesters were the first to attack and Fitchford got well away on the left but Wootton failed to gather the ball when it was put forward to him , and lost a good chance . Another attack by the Vale ended in the ball going behind . For the first five minutes Shields were confined to their own half .
Following a pretty movement by the home forwarde Blood received when close in and ehot hard but Walker had no difficulty in saving . Then Walker had to save again from Page when the latter looked like scor ing The pace was fast , and the Vale were giving the Shields defence an anxious time . Still Cresswell and Maitland did well under pressure , the former kicking strongly and with judgment .
Shields Score .
After eleven minutes play a big change came over the game . The visitors opened the ecoring almost the first time they came . within shooting distance . The ball was taken up on the left and following the centre there was a struggle in front of goal . The danger was partially cleared by the homesters and the ball sent out a little to the right where CHARLTON running in netted with a beautiful first time shot .
- In the next few minutes Shields were almost through again , P. Purcell kicking out from under the bar when Smith was well beaten . Port Vale now rallied and Walker was called upon to save several times and he was not too safe in his clearances .
Blood burst away and had a good open ing , but could not control the lively ball . The Vale forwards could not get going owing to the keen tackling of the North erners ' half - back line .
SHIELDS
SATURDAY
Shields were soon on the aggressive again , Parker being well supplied with passes , but he was too well watched by PPursell to do anything dangerous or cause any damage . In a break away by the home leff Fitchford drove in a long and dropping shot , which Walker caught easily and kicked away . The pace had now slackened down considerably , and Shields were having much the better of the argument , though their forwards found themselves up against a stout defence , upon which they could make little impression . Parker , however , continued hard at work , and his distribution of the ball at times was splendid .
Shielde were playing lovely football , there being much more method put into their work than on the other side . The forwarde worked with better understanding , and the half backe supported them admirably , whereas the Vale's play was disjointed . Charlton on the right was responsible for several good rune , but he was too prone to shoot from almost impossible angles . On the other hand , the Shields left wing once brought Smith out of his goal . and the keeper had to kick away . Northerners continued to swing the ball about with great effect , passing rapidly from wing to wing , while the home backs did well to keep them out . From a centre by Charlton , Hawes tried a pot shot , the ball passing a yard on the wrong side of the peet .
The
Shields kept pegging away right up to the interval , and there could be no doubt about their superiority . On numerous oocasions they came within an ace of scoring , and only the fine defence of the home henve and
