" ) East met West at Horsley Hill this after noon , Blackpool , who have been displaying consistently good form this season , had a slight advantage over the Shieldsmen so far as their League record was concerned , and their team for this afternoon was greatly strengthened by the inclusion of Bedford as leader of the attack recently transferred from Notts Forest . South Shields made four changes in the team that lost to Notts County last week . Woode made a welcome re - appearance after being on the injured list since January 22nd and Keenlyside was introduced at outside right in place of Chariton , who was hurt last Saturday . Cresswell was doing duty for the English League against the Scottish League at Highbury , and Maitland was partnered by Geo . Robson . Last season South Shields secured maxi mun points from Blackpool , winning by 6-0 at Horsley Hill and 3-0 at Blackpool . Taking advantage miskick by M’Gian , Hawes cleverly worked his way through and put the ball across to Woods , who promptly gave Keenlyside possession . The Shields ' right winger dropped in a delightful centre , from which Gavin brought off a smart clearance under pressure . Charles and Barras , on the visitors ' right wing , strove to relieve the pressure , but Robson upset their calculations , and at the other end Woods had hard luck after a smart individual effort . The Shields forwards were showing effective combination , and although con trol was difficult owing to a " bouncing " ball , they swung the leather about in exhilarating fashion . Hawes made an effort to get Lillycrop away , but the Shields leader failed to trap the ball , and Charles , getting possession from the touch line , raced off on his own , covering half the length of the field and defying all opposition . Lister got possession cloee in , and when saving from his shot Walker stumbled and MULHOLLAND seized the opportunity and scored . The ensuing play saw Hewitt rising to stop the ball from going over the Shields line . He succeeded and managed to screw in a nice centre which Mulholland hooked goalward .
