It was a beautiful daythe ground being bathed in sunshine , and 17 : 000 spectators were present when the teams turned out .
The Game .
Shields won the toes and Brown started the game for Stoke .
Shields were early aggressive , and Hawes initiated a pretty movement on the left . Stoke retaliated , however , but Cresswell and Mait land had plenty of time to clear their lines , and it was not long before Keenlyade got away on the right . His pass to Woods , how ever , was intercepted cleverly by Twemlow .
Again the right wing was prominent , and Kennlyside , from a judicious return by Met- . calfe , carried the ball to the 18 yarde mark , but instead of centring , he shot and hit the side of the net .
Once Charlton got clear away , but he pushed the ball too far forward in his eager ness , and Milne cleared .
Stoke had a spell of pressure following this , and Dresswell was prominent with some powerful Kieking .
Neither Hoffman nor Kay had , however , been troubled up to this stage .
Raid by Stoke
Donald beat Brittleton and was running down the field when he was well tacklett by Elle , who cleared splendidly .
There was a brief period of anxiety for the Shields defenders when Brown raced away and was about to shoot at close range when he was stopped by Cresswell .
Play centred round the Shields goal for s time , and in a combined raid by the Stoke forwards , Burton headed wide to the dis . appointment of the crowd .
The pressure was eventually relieved when Clarke handled , and from the free kiok Woods went away on the right .
Timely Interventions Twemlow , however , oleared the danger Ahely . Bo far , there had been little opportunity for marksmanship by the forwards . Both sets of defenders were showing such stubborn resistance that the goalkeepers had scarcely anything to do . Cresswell won admiration from the crowd for his timely interventions during the Stoke attacks , and for his powerful kicking .
There was a thrill for the crowd and at the same time an escape for Bhields when Watkin , under difficulties , cleverly : hooked the ball towards goal , only to se -t mis the post by inches .

Then followed a glorious opportunity Zor Keenlyside . He was given a long low past by Charlton , and , being quite nooncerned , he raped tot goal , but he put top much power behind his centre , and none of his forwards were able to rather the ball .
Again Keenlyside was at fault when he tried to beat Forrester and Twemlow instead of centreing , and another good I opening was lost .
In a race for possession Brown beat Cresswell , but Maitland dashed across and saved an awkward situation .
