CLAPTON 9. v . SOUTH SHIELDS .
At Clapton , in dull weather before 10,000 spectators . Orient made a number of changes from the side that was defeated at 31ields on Wednesday . The rear division was the same with the exception that Dixon appeared for Forrest at right half . Shearer ook Smith's place on the wing , Smith going centre forward . South Shields were in the same order that proved so successful on Wednesday .. Teams :

The St. Hilds Colliery Band played a fine programme of musio prior to the com mencement of the game .
Early Orient Attack .
An early attack by Orient was beaten back by Metcalfe and a period of midfield play fol owed in which the Shields halves took a rominent part . From a throw in Donald nade a nice forward move , and centring Across , enabled the Shields right wing to force matters , and a corner resulted .
Orient went away from the flag kick and ianger threatened when a free kick was iven the Orient outside the penalty area . Conner took the kick but Walker cleared . A rinute later Smith missed with a long shot . After a time the Orient forwards indulged n a lot of long passing , and in the end hearer was put in a good position for shoot ag , but sent wide . The next minute or two aw the Shelds team accomplish some clever vork in defence , but the sides were so well natched tha neither was able to make much eadway .
Half - Backs ' Good Work .
Time
The Shields halves kept the forwards well upplied , and much good work was done by ne wingers , Wilson and Metcalfe . after time Orient looked likely to do some hing , but as often they were met by a sound iefence . The quality of the play was not up o a high standard , and the attack was never orced home by either side , the goalkeepers being very rarely troubled .
There was more snap about the Shields orwards , but they found it very difficult o get the better of the Orient backs . fawes got away for Shields , but lost con rol of the ball in dribbling , and the hance was lot . About this time there as an excellent bit of footwork between ack Smith and Keenlyside , the latter ransferring to Hawes , who , however , ailed to dribble in and shot wide from ong range . The forward work continued
o be poor , and although there was plenty f dash in the game the football was not
of the best kind .
Right Wing Efforts .
A nice dash by the Shields right winger tomised something at last , but Osmond eached Keenlyside's centre before Lilly rop could get up . Then Hawes made a rood move , but he had the ill - luck ose control when matters looked very minpus for the Clapton defence .

icely to Lillycrop . Nicholson , however , was prompt in tackling , and cleared .
Vearing the interval a round of passing between the Shields inside men - ended in Lillycrop shooting wide . A moment later Gray had again to clear from the Shields entre , following a free kick .

The first attack on resumption was made y Orient , and Maitland was responsible for smart clearance . Then Walker brought off clever save from a hard drive by Smith . he Shields half backs got into their stride uickly , and with good eding sent the ight wing away . Keenlyside and Jack Smith . pened up a hot attack , and Gray was called pon to save from the latter .
Walker Severely Tested . Then Walker had a rare trial when severely ested by Bradley twice in quick succession . Tereabouts play improved a good deal , but

DURHAM CITY v . SHIELDS RES . Durham City and South Shields Reserves met & Durham to - day for the sofond time in three weeks . The visitors included Oxberry for Layhe , and , Durhaph were advertised . There were 5,000 spectations when the teams turned out as follows : Durhamn Oity . - Patchett ; Redpath , Dob son ; Vincent , Davison , Cowell ; Toward , Cousins , Young , Thompson , Heather , Bouth Shields Reserves . - Hoffman Rid ley Robson ( G ) ; Dreyer , Stoddard , Robson ( J W ) ; Charlton , Oxberry , Hetherington , Green well , Kirkbride . "
In the opening minute Toward tested Hoffman with a high dropping shot and the Durham players appealed that the goal keepår had overstepped the line in clearing , but the referee ruled otherwise .
Kirkbride and Greenwell carried play to the other end . A fruitless corner resulted , and when the visitors further attacked Oxberry's side foot shot was only just wide of the upright . The exchanges were fast and even . Young followed a pass back by Ridley and emothered Hoffman who how eter succeeded in clearing . At the other end Hetherington was whistled offside when in a prominent position . Ridley finely deprived Young when the Durham centre appeared through and then iollowing & faulty clearance by Redpath , Oxberry was presented with a rare chance of opening the visitors ' account ; his shot , however , sailer high over the bar . Stothard was displaying fine football in the Shield's half back line . Shields Take the Lead .
From one movement initiated by him , Charlton dropped the binto Patchett's hands . Midway through the half and immediately following a fruitless corner to Durham . Shields took the lead . Charl ton raced down on the right and Green well returned the ball to OXBERRY , who screwed the ball into the net , well out of Patchett's reach .:
Two minutes later Greenwell narrowly missed increasing the lead , his cross - drive from Charlton's centre passing just out side the goal . With Kirkbride limping . the Shields played almost entirely on on which right wing . Charlton and Hetherington were showing excellent
form .
So far the Durham forwards had failed to make mach impression upon an inter mediate line . Shields were having the better of the argument . Again Charlton outwitted Cowelt and dropped the ball before the City ; goal , where Patchett smothered Greenwell's shot . A foul by Ridley on Cousins nearly brought about shot for the equalising goal . Vincent goal and Hoffman pulled the ball down . Young headed it back to the crossbar , the ball eventually passing over the goal . The visitors ' halves continued to dominate the game and the fine footwork of the Shields attack was often discon Toward certing to the home defence . was prominent in a Durham advance near the interval . From of his centres Young headed into Hoffman's hands . Just on the interval Patchett deprived Hetherington near the Durham

1 Soon after the resumption Redpath and Charlton collided and the Durham back had to leave the field .
HETHERINGTON immediately after Drib wards put Shields further ahead . bling through the defence from the cen tre line he shot for the right of the goal and the ball passed between Patchett's hands and legs into the net .

With Durham improving Hoffman had to save from Cowell and punch away a droop ing centre from Toward . Eighteen minutes from time Durham reduced the Cousins got the ball out -to TOWARD and the winger planked the ball into the top corner of the net with a delightful cross shot . Oxberty should have replied for Shields when iskicking , the visitors ' centre had an open goal but shot outside . Durham again lost the services of Red path . In the closing stages Patchett effected a brilliant save from Oxberry and immedi ately afterwards was injured in collision with the same player . Just on time CHARLTON scored a third goal for Shields Final
