Mondaygust 31 , 2009 Here's a sticky challenge of identification T SOME old photographs are just made for poring over , and this is one of them . Where do you think the background to this was , for instance ? The picture comes from Bryan Horsnell , in Berkshire , who is public relations officer for the Football Postcard Collectors ' Club . Recently , he acquired this postcard of two teams of footballers , with ( other ? ) servicemen , which is believed to have been taken round about the First World War . It was snapped by Warren Photos , of South Shields , and there is a small stand , to the right of the picture behind the team , which has the wording ' H Randall , The Toffee King ' painted on it . Says Bryan : " I wondered if one of the teams was South Shields Football Club and if they were playing against a wartime Army team . A 180 wood STICKY ... who were these players , snapped against the bab blo - se name of Harry Randall , The Toffee King ? " If any of your readers can identify any of the players , the teams or the ground where the match was played - and when - I would be pleased to hear from them . " Well , what clues does the picture offer ? Confectionary magnate Harry Randall - ' The Toffee King ' , as he was known - had two shops in Shields , one halfway up Mile End Road , on the same side as St Stephen's Church , the other in Ocean Road , just along from the Marine Hotel . Harry Randall himself lived in Grosvenor Road . The problem is , I can't place the building in the backgroun in any of those contexts , although I do have one small suspicion . Any thoughts anyone ? By the way , Bryan is always on the lookout for old and interesting football postcards of players , teams , grounds , match action etc , and would be pleased to hear from any readers who have any such items . Drop him a line at 275 Overdown Road , Tilehurst . |
