HAT a piece of history this picture is
in
the same family for
more than a century and a smashing retrospective of junior football in Shields .
It comes from John Blake , whose great - uncle played for this team , Athletic Juniors AFC . He was William Scaife who is sitting to the right of the trophy , looking at the picture . This was the South Shields Association League Challenge Cup , which they won during the 1894-95 season .
At the time , William would have been living in Eldon Street in the town .

Coming across the photograph , John was encouraged to dig deeper about the team and the league in the pages of the Shields Gazette . This turned up the information that the South Shields Association Football League held its inaugural meeting on June 19 , 1894 , in the Congregational Hall , Ocean Road . The teams that joined the league included Athletic Juniors , Baring Street Wesleyans , Congregational , Shields Celtic , St Jude's II , St. Thomas ' and Trinity Juniors .
In May 1895 , at the end of the season , the first annual meeting of the league was held at the Congregational Hall , when the trophy , donated by TN Alexander , was presented to Athletic Juniors . The Gazette reported that " there was an exceedingly good turn - up of the lovers of the game " and that there was a cheer for Athletic . The trophy was presented to the team captain , T Urwin , who said that he was " glad that his club had come off with flying colours " .

SCORED ... a bit of footballing history from the end of the 19th century .
During the season , the team had only dropped one point out of a possible 24. In his speech , the chairman said that he had seen the team play several times and that they " played a combination game " and that he hoped they would go on to play in the Northern Alliance League .
Later that year , each team member was presented with a " handsome " silver medal in recognition of their win .
The league held a charity match on Boxing Day 1895 , for the benefit of the Victoria Home . The two teams were made up of players from the league , representing the east and west ends of
the borough , with the game played at Mowbray Road . Says John : " My great - uncle played for the west - end team as one of the forwards . '
One of the nice things about the picture is that we have all the names of these players etc.
So , back row , from the left , they comprise Mr J Buglass , G Brown , J Scrafton , WE Irvin , J Dodds ( Pres ) , WG Potts , T Buglass and SP McVay .
Second row : P Youngson , RF Heron , TS Urwin ( Capt ) , W Scaife , R Chaplin and EE Coates . Front : TS Ferguson , R Davies .
Says John : " There is a chance that others may identify an ancestor . "
