SHIELDS v . LUTON . Seasiders and Strawplalters " in Conflict at the " Hill " : Visitors ' Success . All roads led to Horsley Hill this afternoon . For the first time in the history of the club the Seasiders participated in the second round of the great national competition , with Luton Town as their opponents , and , naturally , all local football enthusiasts had a very bad attack of " cup fever . " : The teams had met once before in the English Cup , when the Shieldemen were operating in the humbler realm of the North Eastern League , and on that pccasion the Seasiders succeeded in disposing of the Southerners by 2-0 in a replay at Horsley Hill . That was in the final qualifying round in 1914 , and in the first round proper of the were competition the Shieldsmen defeated by Burnley - the Cup winners of the season - by 3-1 . came It is interesting to recall the fact that last season South Shields and Luton both met Liverpool in the English Cup , the Seasidere being defeated by 2-0 in the first round after & replay . while the " Hatmakers " lost to the Merseysiders by the same score in the second round . In this year's competition Luton provided one of the surprises of the first round by defeating Birmingham , and the Shieldsmen experienced very little difficulty in disposing of Portsmouth Records Compared . ( By WANDERER . " ) Luton have quite a good record in the Third League , and it was generally recognised that the Shieldsmen would have to be going all the time to beat them . Their records up to date in the Second and Third League res pectively are as follows : South Shields ( 5th ) :-P . 24 ; W. 12 ; L. 6 ; D 6 ; For 41 ; Agst . 23 ; Pts . 30 . The hall had come out to Hoar on the touch line , and racing down to the corner flag he sent in a slow centre from which Higgin botham at elose range easily beat Walker . Hopkins gave his forwards possession , but the ball went out on the left before Donald could do any damage . and a few minutes later Cresswell stopped a dangerous rush by Higginbotham and Simms . Luton Town ( 8th ) :-P . 24 ; W. 10 ; L. 8 ; D. 6 : For 40 ; Agst . 36 ; Pts . 26 . but Ernie Simms , the leader of the Luton attack , who is the highest scorer in the Third The visiting forwards played a clever bust Division , is a South Shields man and formerly played for Parkside , and it will be remem - ling game , and the Shields defenders were bered that " Jock " Higginbotham , the visitons ' often hard pressed . Parker broke away.from the Shields centre and placed nieely to Donald , who promptly pulled up by Molyneux . Was Jack Smith then came into the picture , and from his well timed pass , Parker raced off and transferred to Donald who returned the ball into the centre . The Luton goal had a narroape a few minutes later as the result of a clever effort by Hawes and Donald , Keenlyside being juet too late to breast the ball into the net . The Luton , forwards kept the Shields defenders buey , and on one occasion Walker just managed to tip the ball over the bar from a fine long shot by Lamb . The Game . The ground was packed half an hour before the game started , and when the Shielden : en appeared there would be a record crowd - of over 25,000 . Shields were the first to turn cut . Both teams were given a rousing recep tion . It was obvious that the visitors had a distinct advantage in weight .
