Referee : Mr Ernest Shutt , Burnly . Choice of ends fell to the visitors and the eustodian captain chose to defend the river end with a slight breeze and the sun in his favour .
A crowd of about 16,000 saw the Forest right wing get away in promising style and in the first minute Spaven was round Mait land but had a poor position for his shot which went a yard wide . Several times Firth got away from well judged feeding by both his wing halves and from Elliott , the same winger forced a corner and the flag kick was headed out for Spaven to send in a terriffe drive which rebounded from the legs of a defender .
Tracks were then made to the other end by Hawes , and from his opening a corner was conceded on the other wing . Correctly placed by Keerlyside , Parker . headed the ball into the goalmouth for Hawes to head just inside the upright . Johnson made a brilliant save by putting the ball around the upright , but Hawes had already been ruled offside . Johnson was again prominent a few minutes later when Keenlyside and Words drew the defence and left the pivot uncovered .
Forest Gain the Lead .
Rushing out , the goalkeeper threw himself at Parker's feet and cleared in thrilling style . Soon after Hawes was very high and wide from a drive from 15 yards . The Forest forwards were combining exceedingly well and when Harold went past Dryer , he put back to LYTHGOE , who sent in a hard rieifig
shot .
Cresswell , who was close in , tried to head away and appeared to deflect the ball from Walker's line of sight and it entered the net as the shot deserved , and the Forest gained the lead after 16 minutes ' play .
Continuing the play , the Red's right wing were well down the field when the game had to be stopped for an injury ta Elliott , who had to be attended to , but he was only off the field for a couple of minutes . During this period Lythgoe and Harold delighted the crowd with a combination that nearly brought sucess , the inside man finding the top of the trossbar with a topping centre from near the touch line . A spell of centre play followed and Johnston had long shots to deal with from both Hopkins and Kirk bride , but neither of them appeared at all dangerous .
Coming as a relief from midfield play tainted with offside tactics on both sides , the Forest right wing broke away and from de out , Elliott sent in a wonderfal curling shot that struck the far corner of the woodwork and rebounded into play . It was a great etort and well - deserved a goal .
There followed a period in which South Shields pressed and came near scoring . In the first case it was Hawes who drove in a shot which hit the crossbar , while soon afterwards Woods called upon John ston to save a very hot oblique shot . Three minutes from the interval , Firth had a splendid opening , but from 20 yards he ballooned the ball right over the stand on to the riverside . Just after wards Walker saved a shot from Elliott just outside the goal post and play returned through Hawes and Kirkbride , only for the latter to run the ball into touch . Milburn had again to clear from Lillycrop when a few minutes later , the home centre with a ground shot missed the upright by inches . The visitors again got into the home half , and 15 minutes from the end the ball came across from the left wing to MCKENNA , who , from close range , had no difficulty in beating Hoffman and putting the visitors ahead . From the centre kick off Laws raced down on the left , and with a long shot nearly added a second goal , the ball hitting the outside of the netting .
Play was at once taken into the visiting halt where Richardson hit the upright . This
