The Game .
South Shields were first to attack but nothing resulted from their operations in the Wednesday half and when the home for wards eventually got down they were pulled up for offside . There was a gate of about 20,000 and play was fast and exciting from the outset .
In the first few minutes both sides attacked in turn , but the respective defences were always reliable , and the backs proved 200 clever for the opposing forwards . Bellas was conspicuous for splendid tackling dur ing persistent attacks by Charlton and Smith , while Cresswell , the Shields right back , was also prominent for brilliant defensive work . Charlton made good progress on the right and displayed considerable enterprise in his wing movements , but Bellas invariably pioved more than a match for him .
Smelt , the Wednesday right winger , was shaping well when he was smartly pulled up by Metcalfe , and a dangerous situation was relieved by the Shields half back's decisive clearance . Hall was admirably placed when Dreyer nipped in and cleared . while at the other end Lillycrop was man euvering for position when Wilson charged down his shot just inside the penalty area .
Wednesday Loading .
McIntyre had a great chance for the Wednesday during a determined attack upon the Shields goal . After cleverly round . ing Crasswell he was outwitted by Hoffman , who brought off 8 fine save and relieved the pressure by a strong punt down the field .
A promising movement by the Wednesday forwards was led by Hall who put forward for Taylor but the home centre was success fully checked by Dreyer and the next incid ent of note was an exciting race for posses sion between Donald and Brelsford .
The Shields left winger got there first but Brelsford headed over the bar from Donald's centre and the resultant corner was success fully cleared .
When the game was 20 minutes old the Wednesday secured the lead through TAYLOR , who beat Hoffman with a great shot . Lillycrop led a fine rovement by the Shields forwarde , but the effort was effectu ally frustrated by Wilson , the Sheffield centre half , who was giving a brilliant display .
Shields Attack .
The Northerns applied considerable pres .. sure but the Wednesday defenders were on their best behaviour , and attack ' after attack met with the sanie fate at the hands of Bellas and Kell , who were always sound in their stopping work and decisive in their clearances . The Wednesday half backs were a stumbling block to the South Shields Attackers and rarely were they permitted to get within shooting distance .
The home men were playing a great game during the later stages of the opening muth Shields defence was kept Cresswell and Robson gave of tackling with fine

Shortly after another brilliant save by Jeffries from Oxberry resulted in a flag kick . This was cleared and the Home team throughout the remainder of the half were constantly attacking . Chester - le - Street how ever , put up a sturdy defence and the home forwards were unable to add to their score . Final Score :
