Shieldsmen Gain Sparkling Victory Over Londoners .
NEW CENTRE'S PROMISING DEBUT .
Travers and Shea were conspicuous for hard plodding work , which caused the Shields defenders some anxious moments , but they were not always accurate in their marksmanship . Donald , beating the oppos ing back , raced off down the wing , but his centre lacked strength , and Nixon had no difficulty in clearing the line .
Woods and Carruthers came away strongly , and , in order to keep out Bainbridge , Chap lin put back to Worrall , who was unable to clear , and was compelled to resort to a some what risky pass to his custodian .
Travers made an unsuccessful attempt to Shea and McDonald again got going , and forge his way through in the centre .
Cresswell and Robson were fine defend ers , and seldom at fault . Hawes , who had hurt his side shortly before the interval , changed places with Donald , and he was obviously playing under difficulties . Donald worked an opening for Carruthers but the Shields centre was too well covered by Torrance to make much pro gress . Bainbridge doubled neatly into the centre but Hawes was unable to follow up the effort ..

A misunderstanding between Cresswell and Robson let in Banks , but with only Walker to beat , the Fulham man shot wildly past the upright . Carruthers beat Tarrance in a struggle for possession and Nixon had to fist out a great shot by Wood
Dumalt , the Shields left winger , was punsible for the first thrill of the match aking away smartly on his own he gave a handful from long range , and a Sew tes later , following similar atempt he placed the ball a foot wide of 1

The Shields centre , who had been play ing a keen bustling game , dashed in between the backs , to follow up a pass by Metcalfe , and as Nixon came out to meet him he tapped the ball past the goal keeper over the line . It was a slow shot , and Bainbridge , rushing in , breasted it
