OUR VISITORS :
Chronicles of the Chelsea Football Club .
" Armour - plated " Shields .
ELECTED to the Second Division when the Football League was extended to twenty - two clubs in either section , viz . , May , 1919 , South Shields played their first game for League points on August 30th of that year . Their baptism of fire was at Craven Cottage , Fulham , and although they were defeated by a solitary goal , they took ample revenge in the return game a week later .
South Shields have the great merit of consistency , as will be seen by their tally of points earned in each season since joining the League . Enumerated in chrono logical order their seasons ' bag reads as follows : 42 , 44 , 46 , 40 , 44 , and 41. Their average is thus rather better than a point per game right through the six seasons ; distinctly creditable . There is little or no reason to doubt that they will more than maintain this average during the current campaign .
Brief particulars as regards the visiting eleven are appended :
L. H. RICHARDSON hails from Tow Law , and was playing for Shildon Athletic in the North Eastern League when secured by Shields in the spring of 1923 .
J. G. RIDLEY has been with his present club through out their League career . He came from a minor club known as Mickley . Rather short of stature , but very sturdy and capable .
