At the time of going to Press , the club's playing record this season in 38 league and cup games was : W. D. F. A. 24 6 50 126 46 L. 8 64 FROM OUR TEAM MANAGER , ALF McMICHAEL ( 13 years an outstanding player with Newcastle United ; capped 39 times by Northern Ireland ; captain of his country on 20 occasions ; and next season beginning his second three - year contract with our club ) . GENTLEMEN , My club , which I serve with pride , is geared in every possible way to accept membership of the Football League with honour and integrity . Having spent many years in League football , I am fully aware of the demands made upon a club by membership of the Football League , the greatest football competition in the world , but I am confident that were we elected to the League at the forthcoming annual meeting , we would acquit ourselves in the highest ethical and sporting traditions of the League . South Shields have unsuccessfully applied for League status in the past , and today we apply yet again - not , let me hasten to add , out of habit , but out of confidence . We have a case for membership which , we feel , cannot be bettered . We all sincerely hope you will find our case worthy of your vote . For the past two seasons our club has successfully operated in the North Regional League whose membership is made up of First , Second , Third and Fourth Division reserve sides , and week after week we have been praised by these League clubs on the standard and ability of our players , in particular , and the business - like approach by the club in general . In many instances , attendances are falling in the Foot ball League , but at South Shields they are increasing fast . Recently , we staged two friendlies , and on each occasion the attendance was in the region of 10,000 . Gates of 5-6,000 for our league games against the RESERVE sides of League clubs are commonplace ; and this is yet another part of our case which indicates that we could well support a League side . The population of South Shields is in excess of 110,000 and within a 5 - mile radius of our ground there is a popula tion of 200,000 . I could continue at length telling you about the club I serve with pride , but elsewhere in this brochure the ambitious Board of Directors have done it for me . I will 9 |
